NOTE

Ferdinando Martelli was the step-son of the Bolognese sculptor Ignazio Sarti (1790-1854), whose name he subsumed into his own. Ferdinando worked with his step-father in Bologna, Ravenna and Rome, developing a speciality in the portrait bust. Funerary monuments and ecclesiastic work also formed part of his canon. His work can be found in the Pinacoteca di Ravenna, which includes a bust of Sarti dating to 1854 and another of 1862 representing the philanthropist and founder of the Casa di Risparmio di Ravenna, Conte Ippolito Rasponi Delle Teste (1788-1865).
