Notes

This work will be included in the online catalogue raisonné published by the Felix Nussbaum Foundation
In 1932 Nussbaum had received a grant from The German Academy to paint in the Villa Massimo in Rome. After the National Socialists burnt down his studio back in Berlin in December that year, and his grand was revoked in 1933 Nussbaum decided to stay in Italy. During his time there he visits the coastal town of Alassio on the Italian Riviera, where he paints the present lot. A canvas depicting the same scene is part of the collection of the Felix Nussbaum Foundation, and on permanent loan to the Felix Nussbaum Haus in Osnabrück.
