NOTE

De Jouderville was apprenticed to Rembrandt in Leiden between 1629 and 1631, and is thus one of his earliest known pupils. He was also one of Rembrandt's most faithful followers, since he continued to paint in a style wholly derived from Rembrandt's own when in Leiden in circa 1630, long after (or presumably so given the paucity of dated works) his Master had moved on. Not surprisingly, given that Gerrit Dou was also probably a Rembrandt pupil at the same time, De Jouderville's physiognomies also resemble those found in Dou's early work, as can be seen in the present picture, which was thought by Walther R. Valentiner to be by Dou. Professor Dr Werner Sumowski considers this to be an early work, painted while De Jouderville was still in Rembrandt's studio, circa 1630-31. He compares it with other early pictures, such as A young man with a coloured scarf, in the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin (see Literature, vol. II, p. 1439, cat. no. 940, reproduced) or A laughing man with a golden chain, in Museum Bredius, The Hague (ibid., p. 1440, cat. no. 941, reproduced).
