Notes

Ujváry studied under Károly Lotz and Gyula Benczúr (see lot 43) in Munich. In Paris, like many Hungarian artists of his generation, he adopted a freer and fresher palette in response to seeing the work of the plein-airistes and Impressionists. No doubt he would have admired the work of Léon-Augustin Lhermitte, with whose paintings the present work bears striking similarities (fig. 1).
