The central figure in the present work is most likely Anna Vassalo Savino whom Steris married in 1955 and whose image appears in many of his works. The following poem is taken from a letter written by Steris to Anne:

"I love you into the farthest reaches of space.
Into the inner depths of the earth
Into the darkest secrets of life
Back to the begining of time
Forward into the distant future
Into the very heart of life"
