Exceptionnelle tant par la qualité de son ornementation que par sa signature, cette commode témoigne de la perfection à laquelle les ébénistes du règne de Louis XIV étaient parvenus dans le travail de la marqueterie dans la suite des travaux d’André-Charles Boulle.
La façade légèrement cintrée ouvre par quatre tiroirs de longueur à traverse de soutien apparente. Le plateau s’évase délicatement à l’arrière. Elle repose sur de larges pieds en plinthe.
Réalisée en placage d’ébène et en marqueterie en « première partie » de laiton et d’étain sur fond d’écaille rouge, elle offre un superbe décor inspiré des gravures de Jean Bérain (1640-1711), Claude Gillot (1673-1722) et Claude III Audran (1658-1734) qui, par leurs publications diffusèrent largement tout un vocabulaire ornemental prisé par les ébénistes et décorateurs.
Le plateau ceint d’une lingotière en bronze doré et ciselé de rais-de-cœur est orné d’une composition complexe célébrant une Allégorie des Arts. Au centre, sous un dais architecturé, dont on retrouve l’influence notoire de Claude III Audran, une jeune femme assise peint un portrait d’homme en médaillon. A ses côtés, un enfant tient un livre ouvert. De part et d’autre, en réserve, des musiciens jouent du violon. Le fond est peuplé d’angelots jouant avec des oiseaux et des animaux fantastiques parmi un enchevêtrement de rinceaux, volutes, arabesques, acanthes et fleurons. Les tiroirs ainsi que les côtés se couvrent également d’une riche ornementation de lambrequins, volutes, fleurons et oiseaux.
Entrées de serrures, poignées tombantes et masques de Bacchus en bronze doré complètent la décoration du meuble. Elle porte l’estampille de Nicolas Sageot (1666-1731) qui fut avec André- Charles Boulle le plus important représentant de l’ébénisterie française à la fin du règne de Louis XIV.
Les débuts de Sageot se situent aux environs de 1690. Il accède à la maîtrise en 1706 et fut l’un des rares ébénistes à apposer sa marque sur ses créations avant l’édit de 1751 rendant obligatoire l’estampillage. Son atelier fut prospère tout au long de sa carrière qu’il décida d’y mettre un terme en 1720 pour devenir rentier avant de sombrer dans la folie en 1723.
Son OEuvre s’inscrit dans la tradition de la marqueterie illustrée par André-Charles Boulle et peut parfois être confondu?? Sageot employant le marqueteur Toussaint Devoye qui travaillait parallèlement pour d’autres ébénistes. Il se distingue cependant par une construction plus sommaire et un dessin moins complexe. Les meubles estampillés de Sageot demeurent rares, plus nombreux sont ceux qui lui sont attribués. On peut citer les deux bureaux de type « Mazarin » conservés pour l’un au Musée du Petit Palais à Paris et pour l’autre dans les collections royales de Suède qui portent la signature du maître.

For any member of the EEC, non assembled stones are liable to VAT 20%.
The auctioneer is bound by the indications in the catalogue, modified only by eventual announcements made at the time of the sale noted into the legal records thereof.
