Notes

Raised in Iowa, Drewelowe had the distinction of being the first recipient of a Masters of Painting degree at the University of Iowa in the early 1920s. However, she spent most of her life in Boulder, Colorado, where her husband, Jacob Van Ek, was Dean of Arts and Sciences at the University of Colorado. She was a prodigious artist and in the course of her long life experimented with various styles--impressionism, social realism and even abstract expressionism. She traveled with her husband extensively throughout the world, taking inspiration from the places she visited. The major part of her work, however, was devoted to her great love of the landscapes of Colorado and the West.
