Notes

A student of Cogniet and Troyen, he debuted at the Salon in 1843, painting children and other light-hearted subjects, before taking an interest in historical subjects which often have a sympathy to the horror of war. He had a considerable reputation and gained a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889. Bordeaux, Aix-en-Provence, Amiens Nice and Nantes museums have conserved his works among others.
