Condition Report

The canvas is unlined, the paint surface is stable and the varnish appears even but somewhat discoloured. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals three damages: one measuring 1 in. above the heads of the standing figures on the left; another in the right hand of the facing figure on the left; and a third, well-restored, to the left of the shin of the figure bottom right, measuring 2 in. in length. Both these damages are supported by canvas patches on the reverse. There are also signs of stabilised lifting towards the edges. There are two horizontal lines running parallel through the centre of the canvas with lines of restoration along them, perhaps from a fold. Also visible under ultraviolet are scattered old retouchings and strengthenings but the painting is in overall good condition, with much of the impasto in its original state.
