Eugenie Gershoy (American, 1901-1983)

Prometheus. Incised signature "E. Gershoy" in the bronze at the rear of the base, bronze with a brown patina, height 12 1/4 in., mounted to a marble plinth. Condition: Dust and dirt to interstices.

N.B. Emigrating to New York City as an infant from her native Russia, Eugenie Gershoy took to drawing and painting as a child and was winning awards as early as 1914. She studied for one year at the Art Students League, before leaving to marry Harry Gottlieb and relocating to Woodstock, New York. It was at the ASL that she developed her interest in sculpture. She moved back to New York City in 1935 to work for the Federal Art Project, and in 1942 she headed west to San Francisco where she taught ceramics and sculpture for twenty years. Gershoy returned to New York in the 1960s where she continued to create sculpture.
