Exceptionnel secrétaire à corps quadrangulaire, à découpe cintrée, en placage de palissandre de Rio, surmonté d'une tablette rectangulaire soutenue par une sphère et des arceaux en laiton à patine nuageuse traités en oxydation. Il ouvre en façade par un abattant donnant sur un bar éclairant en placage de sycomore découvrant un intérieur entièrement plaqué de miroirs et en partie basse par deux portes. L'ensemble est entièrement recouvert de trois panneaux en dinanderie à décor d'échassiers et de motifs végétaux stylisés patinés par Jean Dunand. Il repose sur une base trapézoïdale soulignée d'un jonc débordant en laiton oxydé. Clef d'origine. Estampillée en bas à droite "EP" en marqueterie. Vers 1935. H : 140 cm L : 79 cm P : 37 cm (Légers accidents) Né en 1889 dans une famille d'ébénistes, la formation d'Eugène Printz est avant tout familiale et classicisante. Il apprend à réaliser des meubles dans la tradition du XVIII° avec une technique irréprochable et un savoir-faire inégalable. Ce n'est qu'à partir des années 20' qu'il semble gagné par les nouvelles recherches artistiques de son temps. Il commence alors à collaborer avec Pierre Chareau et à exposer de façon récurrente aux différentes expositions (salon d'automne, exposition internationale des Arts Décoratifs etc...). Très vite, le succès est au rendez-vous et il réalise des meubles aussi bien pour le mobilier national que pour des aristocrates ou des célébrités de l'époque.
Le milieu des années 30, c'est-à-dire la date de réalisation des deux secrétaires que nous présentons, correspond à un retour à des formes plus généreuses et plus rondes, ainsi qu'à une accentuation de la part du décor sur le meuble. Certains spécialistes de l'ébéniste qualifient même cette période de « baroque ». On y retrouve cependant des éléments récurrents du vocabulaire stylistique de l'artiste. Ainsi le souci de la ligne et de la construction architectonique du meuble sont ici bien présents, l'esthétisme ne lui faisant jamais oublier la vocation pratique du meuble. De même, Printz, ne renonce pas, à son goût du détail et du raffinement. Les deux secrétaires sont donc entièrement plaqués intérieurement de sycomore mais également de miroirs. Les archives de l'époque attestent du soin et des recherches constants de Printz pour améliorer la fonctionnalité et la qualité de ses réalisations. L'emploi du métal, soulignant les lignes du meuble, est une réminiscence de sa formation « classique » mais aussi le témoignage de son goût pour l'emploi du métal dans le mobilier. Le décor du meuble constitué de trois panneaux de laque à décor d'échassiers est réalisé par Jean Dunand, avec qui Printz collabora à partir de 1928. Cette collaboration devait durer jusqu'à la mort de Dunand en 1942 avant d'être poursuivie par son fils Pierre. Cette association de deux grands « esprits » de leur époque permit la réalisation de meubles exceptionnels que se disputent encore âprement aujourd'hui les collectionneurs. La beauté des décors des panneaux de laque réalisés par Dunand ayant tendance à éclipser son travail d'ébéniste, Printz eut alors l'idée d'un nouveau décor : le travail aux acides sur métal. (slight accidents) Being born, in 1889, into a family of cabinet makers, Eugene Printz recieved a mainly family and conventionally classical training. He learnt to make furniture in the traditional 18th century style with perfect technical knowledge and incomparable expertise. It wasn't until the 1920's that he began to become interested in the new artistic research of those times, to collaborate with Pierre Chareau and to be present in different exhibitions (Salon d'Automne, Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs etc...) He quickly became successful and began making furniture, not only for the Mobilier National but also for the aristocrats and famous people of that period. The middle 1930's, that is to say when the two secretaries that we are presenting were made, corresponds to a period when more generous, rounded forms and also more decoration were appreciated once again, a period that certain specialists qualify as being "baroque". However one can find certain recurring elements of the artist's stylistic vocabulary. Here the worry of design and architonic furniture construction are well present, however he never permitted the aestheticism to make him forget the practical function of furniture. Printz never gave up his taste for detail and refinement. The interiors of the two secretaries are not only entirely lined in sycamore but also in mirrors. The archives of the period tell of Printz's continual research to improve the practicality and the quality of his work. The use of metal to accentuate the lines of furniture is reminiscence of his classical training and it also tells of his taste for metal in furniture design. The three lacquered panels decorated with wading birds were made by Jean Dunand with whom Printz collaborated from 1928 until Dunand's death in 1942, after which he collaborated with his son Pierre. This association of two great "minds" of their time permitted the making of exceptional pieces of furniture which are so sought after today by art collectors. COLLECT AND STORAGE CONDITIONS
Purchased items may be withdrawn, free of charge, following the sale

All items which have not been collected at Drouot will be transferred
to our Neuilly auction house and stored for a period of one month free of charge.
For voluminous items
Items of voluminous dimensions will be transferred directly to our storage
unit located at Saint-Denis (93200).
There will be a transfer fee of 40 Euros per lot (not exceeding 3 items
that is for a maximum charge of 120 Euros VAT inclusive).
For the first 15 days (until the 25th of June 2010), storage
will remain free of charge.
Passed this delay (from the 28th of June 2010 onwards), storage fees
will be applied as the following:
Items measuring less than 50 cm in height :
- There will be a storage fee of 1.50 Euros HT/1.79 Euros TTC per day.
Items measuring over 50 cm in height :
- There will be a storage fee of 3.50 Euros HT/4.18 Euros TTC per day.
In order to simplify the collect, items of various sizes will be stored together
at our storage unit for one same buyer.
Attention : For the retrieval of any cumbersome items, the auction house does
not guarantee the handling procedure. The buyer will therefore be expected to
insure the minimum presence of two persons for the collect.
Our opening hours a tour storage unit are the following:
Thursdays from 10.00 AM to 1.00 PM and 2.00 PM to 5.00 PM.
Fridays from 10.00 AM to 1.00 PM.
