According to inscriptions to the reverse of the frame, the present lot appears to be a set design by Ernst Stern, executed circa 1900, for a scene in Der Arme Heinrich, an opera written by Hans Pfitzner which premiered in Berlin on 19 December 1900. Der Arme Heinrich was based upon a poem by the German medieval poet Hartmann of Aue.
