Item Overview

Description

Ernst Mollenhauer (1892 Tapiau/East Prussia - 1963 Düsseldorf) Evening light on Sylt, oil on canvas laid down on board, 48 cm x 62 cm, signed, dated 60, some losses of pigment, minor scratches, several round dents in the upper section

Ernst Mollenhauer was born in Tapiau on August 27th 1892. Through Lovis Corinth, who was also from Tapiau and a friend of his father, he experienced early support and was allowed to study at the Königsberg Academy of Art in 1913. His fellow students included Richard Pfeiffer, among others. During the First World War, Mollenhauer fought in Poland, Italy, Russia and France. Immediately after the end of the war he resumed his studies, participated in the founding of the artists' association "Der Ring" and was a master pupil of Arthur Degner as of 1920. After studying painting at the Königsberg Academy, Mollenhauer moved to the famous artists' village of Nidden on the Baltic Sea, where he met Expressionist painters such as Pechstein.

Due to the turmoil of war, painful ostracism and the loss of a large part of his works, Mollenhauer finally moved to the West. By 1950 he had his own studio again in the Düsseldorf Künstlerhaus and set up another studio on Sylt, which reminded him of his lost home on the Bay of Danzig and his early artistic years in Nidden. Using sparse, well-placed brushstrokes in a vigorous style, Mollenhauer succeeded in capturing the character of the North Frisian coastal landscape, giving it a sense of expressive drama. In many of these paintings, it is the sunsets that dominate the mood and the light-drenched colours of nature.
