Description

Gelatin silver print, from a 1940 image. 8 1/2 x6 3/4 mounted to 14x11 mat. Inscribed in pencil on mat: "Barbara Morgan 1940 / Martha Graham-El Penitente-(Hawkins)." and on the verso additionally inscribed and with Barbara Morgan's copyright inkstamp. Dramatic image of dancer Erick Hawkins in mid-leap against a cloudy sky, with a whipping rope. "El Penitente is a dance of the Penitentes of the Southwest, a sect which believes in the purification from sin through severe penance. Even today, the sect practices its ancient rites, though they are banned by the Catholic Church as unholy acts" (Martha Graham, Blood Memory).
