Sir George Beaumont, 7th Baronet (1753-1827) was a painter and important Patron of the arts. His collection of old master paintings formed the basis for the National Gallery, London. He was educated at Eton College where he took drawing lessons from Alexander Cozens (1717-1786). He became MP for Bere Alston in Devon in 1790 but after a few years gave up this career to concentrate on his great interest in the field of the fine arts. He lived at 34 Grosvenor Square and in 1792 added a picture gallery to the residence. He also had a country seat at Coleorton in Leicestershire. Beaumont exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1792 to 1825. He painted in the Lake District and Wales. He became close friends with the Lake Poets, William Wordsworth and Samuel Coleridge. In 1795 he was introduced to John Constable (1775-1837) who frequently stayed with the Beaumonts at Coleorton, studying the old master picture collection. He visited Italy in 1821 and met with the sculptor Antonio Canova (1757-1822). Whilst there he purchased the Taddei Tondo sculpture by Michelangelo, which he later presented to the Royal Academy. He bequethed his collection of old master paintings to the nation on condition that a suitable building be found to create a national gallery. The National Gallery opened in 1824. Amongst his bequest were masterpieces by Claude Lorrain, Rembrandt, Poussin, Rubens, and Canaletto.
