Notre bronze est probablement celui illustré dans le catalogue de l’exposition The French Bronze – 1500 to 1800, n° 57, présenté à New-York en 1968 par M. Knoedler& Co.

Notes

Chef-d’œuvre de la sculpture française à l’époque de Louis XIV, ce groupe en bronze à patine brune montrant Enée, fils de Vénus et d’Anchise, cuirassé et casqué, quittant Troie en flammes en portant son père suivi de son jeune fils Ascagne, constitue une remarquable et dramatique composition d’obédience baroque, influencée par Giambologna et Le Bernin, créée par deux des plus grands sculpteurs de la fin du règne du Roi Soleil, François Girardon et Pierre Lepautre. Tiré de l’Enéide, poème inachevé de Virgile, le groupe évoque la fuite d’Enée, au moment où Troie tomba aux mains des Achéens grâce à la célèbre ruse d’Ulysse. Enée est représenté en position cabrée, en appui sur sa jambe gauche, enjambant un fragment d’architecture symbolisant la destruction de la ville de Troie. Il porte enserré dans ses bras son père Anchise, ce dernier levant les yeux au ciel, simplement vêtu d’un drapé autour de sa taille, coiffé d’un bonnet, et tenant le Palladium, image de Pallas qui deviendra l’emblème sacré des Romains. De sa main droite tendue dans le dos d’Enée, Anchise tient le poignet du jeune Ascagne, tourné vers la ville et cherchant désespérément des yeux sa mère Créüse, fille de Priam, qui a disparu. Le groupe repose sur un tertre feuillagé de section carrée et légèrement bombé. Il constitue une réduction de l’original en marbre blanc réalisé entre 1697 et 1716 par Pierre Lepautre d’après une esquisse en cire que lui avait confiée François Girardon en 1696. Exécutée durant le séjour de l’artiste à l’Académie de France à Rome à partir de 1697, transportée en France en 1715 pour orner le jardin du château de Marly, l’œuvre aujourd’hui conservée au Musée du Louvre, signée P. LE-PAUTRE FECIT, 1716, fut terminée avec l’aide de Jacques Bousseau. Un modello en terre cuite en réduction de l’œuvre originale en marbre est aujourd’hui conservé au sein du Victoria and Albert Museum à Londres. Au XVIIIe siècle, Lepautre lui-même en avait conservé un exemplaire dans son atelier et Lalive de Jully, le célèbre introducteur des ambassadeurs de Louis XV, en posséda également un autre. L’œuvre de Lepautre suscita un vif intérêt auprès des amateurs et collectionneurs du XVIIIe siècle qui se piquèrent d’en posséder une version en bronze en réduction. Les grandes ventes aux enchères de cette époque apparaissent très révélatrices de cet engouement et mentionnent en particulier la présence de groupes en bronze similaires au nôtre dans le cabinet de Monsieur de Selle, Trésorier Général de la Marine, chez le peintre Pierre Le Brun, ou encore dans la collection Peters vendue à Paris le 9 mars 1779. Parmi les rares exemplaires de ces bronzes subsistant aujourd’hui, signalons en sus du nôtre, celui provenant de la collection Seligmann, acquis en 1962 par le musée des Beaux-Arts d’Ontario, au Canada et celui conservé à Cambridge, Massachusetts (U.S.A.), au Harvard Art Museums.
