Notes

A champion of straight photography, influential critic and photographer Emmanuel Sougez founded the French photographic movement, Photographie Pure , which held ideals similar to Group f.64. Using a large-format camera, he was known for his contact prints of still life, sculpture, and nudes. The Pawel Barchan studio was a photography agency in Paris that operated prior to World War II. The Barchan studio stamp indicates that the present print was made for commercial purposes.
