NOTE

A champion of straight photography, Emmanuel Sougez founded the French photographic movement Photographie Pure, which held ideals similar to Group f.64. In the 1930s, he was a mentor to Dora Maar (see Lot 29), guiding her through the beginning stages of her career.

The Pawel Barchan studio was a photography agency in Paris that operated prior to World War II. The Barchan studio stamp, along with the inscription 'Publicite,' indicate that the present print was made for commercial purposes.
