Item Overview

Description

Portrait of a young woman wearing a coral bead necklace oil on panel 10 x 8 in. (25.4 x 20.3 cm.) PROVENANCE Jefferson Young, Newcastle-upon-Tyne by 1934. NOTES Emma Sandys, sister of the painter Frederick Sandys (1829-1904), exhibited five works at the Royal Academy, including a portrait of the Duchess of St Albans. Emma often gave her generic portraits titles derived from myth or literary romance. The present picture is typical, in that the head is framed by a narrow surround and the surface is highly decorative. It compares to Fiammetta, sold at Christie's, London, 5 March 1993, lot 114 (œ3,680). It is possible that the indistinct mark (upper right) is that of the artist's circular monogram. We are grateful to Betty Elzea, author of the recent monograph on Frederick Sandys, for confirming the attribution.
