Known for both her portraits and light-infused paintings of landscape and still life scenes, Emma Richardson Cherry was a Texas artist who studied at the Art Institute in Chicago and in New York at the Art Students League under such masters as William Merritt Chase. She studied and exhibited in Italy and France, training at the Academie Julian in Paris and also with Luc-Olivier Merson. Settling in Houston in 1893, Cherry was active in art circles and frequently exhibited her work, earning several awards over the course of her career.

Emma Richardson Cherry exhibited extensively during her career. Her shows included the Paris Salon, Art Institute of Chicago, World's Columbian Exposition, Annual Texas Artists Exhibition, Art Association of New Orleans, Annual Exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists, Annual Cotton Palace Exhibition, Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Southern States Arts League, and the Edgar B. Davis Wildflower Competition. At the time of her death at the age of ninety-four, she was the oldest living member of the Art Students League.

This light-filled watercolor was painted by Cherry during a trip to France shortly after she was married.
