Description

Emma Mendenhall (American, Ohio, 1873 - 1964), "To Market," gouache/mixed media on paper board, unsigned (matches her other known works in style and subject), measures 10 x 13 inches unframed, 18 x 21 inches framed in a Barbizon style frame. CONDITION: Good, somewhat dirty, frame with losses. Known for her impressionistic watercolors, especially flowers but including landscapes and portraits, Emma Mendenhall was born in Cincinnati, Ohio at a time when it was a thriving artist community that included Frank Duveneck, John Twachtmann, Joseph De Camp, Henry Farny, Dixie Selden and Joseph Henry Sharp. She studied with Duveneck at the Cincinnati Art Academy, with Jules Lefebvre in Paris at the Julian Academy, with William Merritt Chase in Shinnecock Hills, Long Island, and Charles Woodbury at his Ogunquit, Maine Summer School.
