Emma Jones married, in 1837, the celebrated chef Alexis Soyer. Soyer's fame resulted from his position as the chef of London's Reform Club from 1837 to 1850 as well as the several publications on cooking that he produced. He invented a 'soup kitchen' to help alleviate the suffering of the Irish during the famine of 1847, and improved the provisioning of the army during the Crimean War.
