Item Overview

Description

EMILY GUTHRIE SMITH (1909-1986)
Woman with Still Life, 1955
Oil on canvasboard
24in. x 18in.
Signed and dated upper left
Titled verso

Known for her portraits and still lifes, this painting transcends both genres. The title explains the intention of the painting: a still life with a sitter.

The verso of the painting reveals that it was part of the Fort Worth Art Center (precursor of the Fort Worth Modern Museum) Rental Program. In this program people could rent or buy paintings by local artists for display in their homes. This and similar programs with the Dallas Museum of Fine Art were meant to encourage patronage of local artists under sponsorship of the local museums. The goal was also to provide a means ("rental") where folks of ordinary income could enjoy fine art in their homes.
