life-sized, patinated bronze, signed E. CARLIER and dated 1865.

NOTE

This impressively sized bronze cast of Carlier's La Cruche Cassée can almost certainly be identified with the very bronze he submitted to the Salon in 1865 (no. 2896). It was evidently well received, for the following year he submitted a version in marble (no. 3462) which was bought by a certain Mr. Nagelmackers. Either this marble, or the present bronze, is the one listed by Lami as having sold at the Hotel Drouot in 1887. La Cruche is mentioned in the Livrets des Salons in 1865, p. 384. Carlier, who was a Parisian by birth, made his debut at the Salon in 1859, during which time he was apprenticed to Feuchère. He continued to exhibit until 1879, the year he died. His studio was located at 22 quai Jemmapes.
