Maria Isabella of Spain (1789-1848), wearing crimson dress, white lace shawl, matching bonnet dressed with pink flowers, suite of matching pendant earrings, necklace and brooch and white glove on her left hand, she rests on a green cushion, columns and vista of the bay of Naples and Vesuvius in the background
signed on obverse and dated Guerard/ 1833, gilt-metal frame with pierced flowerhead and enamel bead border, pink spotted enamel ribbon cresting, the reverse glazed to reveal gold monogram surmounted by crown on plaited hair
Oval, 65mm. (2 1/2ins.) high

Artist or Maker

Notes

Maria Isabella was the daughter of Charles IV of Spain and Princess Marie-Louise of Parma. She married in 1802, Francis I (1777-1830), king of the Two Sicilies (1825-30), by whom she had 12 children. For portraits of two of her brothers, see lots 126 and 127.
The present lot was painted in Naples, where the artist died three years later.
