Notes

The bust can probably be identified as that sent by Wolff from Rome for exhibition at the Royal Academy, London in 1841 (no.1257), representing the great English parliamentary reformer and slavery abolitionist Fowell Buxton, popularly known at the time as 'the friend of the negro' and 'the emancipator'. Wolff was a leading German sculptor active in Rome.
