Item Overview

Description

AMSTERDAM 1622 - 1690 LEEUWARDEN INTERIOR OF A STABLE Black chalk and grey wash, within brown ink framing lines; bears old attribution in black chalk, verso: Adr. van Ostade 204 by 147 mm

Artist or Maker

Provenance

Sale, Berlin, 21 June 1919, lot 136 (as Adriaen van Ostade)

Notes

Only two signed drawings by Murant are known: a monogrammed farmyard scene in Leiden1, and a study of a barn, signed with the artist's full name, which was on the art market in 1946. Around these two sheets, and on the basis also of comparison with his paintings, a group of drawings has been constructed, into which the present sheet fits very comfortably. It is particularly comparable with the drawing of a corner of a farmyard, also formerly attributed to Ostade, which was sold from the Klaver collection in 1994.2 1. Prentenkabinet der Rijksuniversiteit, inv. AW 1276-a 2. Sale Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 10 May 1994, lot 60
