Note:
Elspeth Buchanan was the daughter of the Scottish artist Evelyn Oughtred Buchanan. She was born in Bridge Of Weir, Renfrewshire and lived in Edinburgh. Buchanan studied at Edinburgh College of Art from 1933-38. In 1938 she gained a one year traveling scholarship. During the war she worked in naval intelligence in Oxford, where in 1943 she studied art with Bernard Meninsky. Buchanan was a member of the Scottish Society of Artists and the Scottish Society of Women Artists.
