Item Overview

Description

Elliott Daingerfield (American/North Carolina, 1859-1932), Spirit of the Canyon, oil on canvas, signed lower right with brass artist plaque on frame, 27.5in. x 21 in., in a period Newcomb Macklin frame. E20000/30000 Note: Known for his mystical landscape paintings, Elliott Daingerfield earned acclaim for his series on the Grand Canyon. Daingerfield was raised Fayetteville, North Carolina and studied art with George Inness and Walter Satterlee at the Art Students League. Inness was an early champion of his student and as a young artist Daingerfield exhibited at the National Academy of Design and joined the Holbein Studios. Daingerfield turned to religious subjects in the 1890s and came to believe that art was the language of the spirit. In the early twentieth century, the Santa Fe Railroad sponsored a group of east coast artists to travel to the Grand Canyon. As a member of this group, Daingerfield found in the Western landscape both spiritual and artistic inspirations. In this painting, Spirit of the Canyon, Dangerfield shows a nude woman struggling to climb the rocky terrain. An angel figure stands in the radiating sunlight atop the cliff beckoning her on.
