ELIZABETH WENTWORTH ROBERTS (American, 1871-1927) PASTORAL NEW ENGLAND LANDSCAPE initialled EWR and dated 1910, l.r.; oil on canvas; 11 3/4 x 16 3/4 inches Note: In 1922, Elizabeth Roberts purchased the Jonathan Ball House in Concord for the purpose of ''the encouragement, promotion and advancement of art and art exhibitions.'' She hired architect Lois Howe to create a skylighted gallery space in the home, thus establishing the Concord Art Centre. Prominent American Sculptor, Daniel Chester French, became the first President of the board of directors of the Centre.
