Elizabeth Dalton (British, 1950-2013) Costume design for Jupiter from Holst's The Planets, 1992 signed, dated and inscribed 'Stuttgart' (lower right) and titled (upper left) pen and watercolour 40.5cm x 27cm. Elizabeth Dalton was one of the leading ballet and opera designers of her generation, designing for shows in Germany, Italy and Russia as well as The Royal Opera House in London. Dalton studied theatre design at the Wimbledon School of Art and went onto the Slade School of Fine Art. She designed sets and costumes for John Cranko's The Taming of the Shrew (1969) in Stuggart and after its premiere it became part of the Royal Ballet's repertoire and was also performed by the Bolshoi in Moscow. She designed several other Cranko ballets, but also worked for some years with the opera director John Cox, which included set and costume designs for Mozart's Il re pastore (1971), as well as The Merry Widow for ENO at the Coliseum. She was also a well-known teacher, particularly at the Central School in London.
