This diptych is taken from Elina Brotherus' ongoing series Artist and Her Model (2005-), a body of work which continues the visual vocabulary of The New Painting and the 2002 onwards Model Studies. In the present series Brotherus is interested in the artist's perception of the model. She aims for an artist's gaze which is neither male nor female, but something neutral, observing, sometimes surprised, sometimes admiring. As the subject of her own photographs since the 1990s, Brotherus here points also to the double identity that she has long assumed in her own work.
