2 volumes, 2° (540 x 379mm). Half-titles. Atlas volume: 12 double-page photogravures and 2 photogravures on one single-sheet, 53 double-page lithographic plates, most in colour, 3 phototypes on one single-sheet and one double-page coloured map of the environs of Paris. Text volume: engraved portrait frontispiece of Eiffel, numerous text illustrations and two double-page plates of autographs in facsimile. (Atlas volume: flyleaves loose, first and third fold-out explanation text-leaves creased at fore-edge, another loose and a few others with light dog-earing, photogravure plates with light marginal browning, photogravure 7 loose with edges lightly frayed and light vertical creasing to central fold. Text volume: light marginal browning, occasional light finger-soiling.) Original dark green half morocco, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt (extremities rubbed, plate volume worn with head of spine defective, upper joint splitting to text volume). LIMITED EDITION, ONE OF 500 SETS OF THE FIRST EDITION of one of the earliest complete monographs on a modern building. It has served as the standard for all subsequent studies on the architecture of 19th-century metal structures. RARE: this superb work, published at the author's expense, was never issued commercially but given by Eiffel to public libraries, universities, French and foreign scientific societies, and important contemporaries.
