Possibly mentioned in the inventory of paintings drawn up in 1801-3, no. 183;
Katalog der zur Fideikommis-Galerie des Gesamthauses Braunschweig and Lüneburg, Brunswick 1905, no. 239;
Fideikommis Galerie sale, Berlin, Cassirer and Helbing, 27-28 April 1926, lot 97 (as Attributed to Frans van Mieris the Younger), when acquired by the grandfather of the present owner;
Eigentum der Stadt Museum, Gera, following confiscation circa 1948;
Restituted to the heirs of the above in 2003.

NOTE

We are grateful to Mr. Eddy Schavemaker for endorsing the attribution to Eglon van der Neer on the basis of a transparency; the present work will be included in his forthcoming monograph on the artist. Mr. Schavemaker believes the present work to have indeed been executed in 1691 as it coincides with other representations by the artist of Mary Magdalene from the same period.
