Notes

Edwin Zwakman explores photographed reality. But it is a reality created down to the very last detail by the artist using an array of scale models made from cardboard, cotton wool, bin liners and paint. Polders, dikes, canals, motorways, intersections, building sites, apartment buildings and interiors populate his photographs, presenting us with an almost identical take on the real world. Often printed on an imposingly large scale, Zwakman's photos make evident the artist's fascination with notions such as 'construction' and 'transformation'. The series Apartment depicts a flat that, in almost every aspect, is typical of so many of its kind in the Netherlands: a standard white-walled rental dwelling with a through lounge, cramped galley kitchen and ikea closet.

Edwin Zwakman was resident artist at the Rijksakademie in 1996-1997.
