Edward William (Ted) Godwin 1933 - Canadian oil on canvas and burlap Blue Molyvos 58 x 50 3/4 inches 147.3 x 128.9 centimeters Literature:William Withrow, Contemporary Canadian Painting, 1972, page 154 Provenance:Acquired directly from the Artist by Douglas Morton, Regina By descent to Douglas Morton's son, Toronto Ted Godwin was a member of the group of abstract painters known as the Regina Five, which also included Ronald Bloore, Kenneth Lochhead, Douglas Morton and Arthur McKay. During a 1962 visit to an Emma Lake Workshop north of Regina, New York art critic Clement Greenberg commented, "Five such fired-up artists would amount to a lot in New York, let alone a city of 125,000." Blue Molyvos displays the texture, through the layering of burlap on canvas, and the brilliant blue colouration for which Godwin became recognized.
