A pair of portraits of Mr and Mrs Cropper: he, Edward Cropper (d. c. 1878), seated in a wooden chair, in black coat, grey waistcoat, black tied cravat, gem-set ring on his left hand, a pair of spectacles in his right hand, his arm resting on a table with papers, draped red curtain background; she, the Hon. Margaret Cropper, née Denman (1815-1899), seated in mauve upholstered wooden chair, in black velvet dress with white lace collar and cuffs, white lace shawl over her fair centre-parted upswept hair, wearing gold bracelets, holding a white handkerchief; window in background, the sill set with vase of flowers
on ivory

Edward Cropper was the second husband of the Hon. Margaret Denman, daughter of Thomas Denman, 1st Baron Denman of Dovedale (1779-1854), Solicitor-General to Queen Caroline, Attorney-General to King William IV between 1830 and 1832, and Lord Chief Justice between 1832 and 1850; and his wife, Theodosia Anne Vevers, later styled Baroness Denman of Dovedale. The portraits may have been painted to mark their marriage on 10 August 1848.
