CATALOGUE NOTE

Ryley exhibited at the Royal Academy from his studio at 91 Dean Street, Soho, between 1833 and 1837 and specialised in portrait busts. In 1835, the date appearing on the present works, he exhibited no less than five male busts, identified in Graves (op.cit.). He also worked in bronze, producing a bust of Cardinal Newman, sold Christie's, 14 May 1987, lot 9.
