Island of Trinidada in the South Atlantic (now Trindade) extensively inscribed (on the mount)watercolour heightened with white25.5 x 35.5cm (10 1/16 x 14in).unframed

Provenance: Through the artist's family.The mount inscription reads:'The Island of Trinidada, in South Atlantic. Lat 20.31 S. long 29.18 W.This Isles is about 6 miles in circumference. North End Barren. South End covered with evergreen trees. Plenty of sea fowl & Rock fish/many wild hogs, goats & cats, some of the trees 18 ins in diameter. the Monument Rock (centre of drawing) is 850 feet high, large/trees grow on top. There is a Sugarloaf Rock at S.E. End (not even in drawing) 1,160 feet high, it also is topped with layer trees. The/Portuguese had a settlement on this island but it has long since been abandoned. The "Newcastle" sighted Trinidada on her outward voyage for her/passage home Came in sight of it Sunday morning March 12th 1871, experienced light baffling winds all day, it was first --- when the land was due East where/this sketch was taken. It was 2.30 p.m. on this day that we spoke "Knight Companion", shown in drawing, who informed us peace was proclaimed --- France v Prussia.'
