Notes

Baily's marble bust of 1843 shows Henry Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston (1784-1865) before he twice became Prime Minister in the 1850s. At this time Palmerston was focussed on foreign policy, acting as Foreign Secretary at various intervals from around 1830 after having left the Tory party and joined the liberals. Unrecorded by Rupert Gunnis, this portrait bust is a new addition to Baily's extensive corpus of portraits and is a fine example of his mature style in which he handled the bust format in a manner inspired by Francis Chantrey.
