Notes

Edward Deckers (1873-1956) was one of Belgium's most prominent sculptors of the early 20th century, though today his work is relatively obscure. During his long career he experienced both critical and popular success, culminating in his appointment as the inaugural professor of life modelling at the Académie Royale in Brussels.

One of Deckers' most familiar sculptures, Le Charmeur made its first appearance to much acclaim at the 1903 Brussels Salon, and that cast was promptly acquired by the Musée Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique. The same cast was later exhibited at the International Exhibition in Liège, Belgium in 1905 and at the Exhibition of L'Art Contemporain in Antwerp in 1908.

The present example, just like the famous original, was cast by Jacques Petermann at the Fonderie Nationale des Bronzes (in operation 1870-1967) in Saint-Gilles, Brussels, a district of particular cultural exuberance during the fin-de-siècle, perhaps best known for its tremendous Art Nouveau architecture by Victor Horta and his contemporaries.

For another example of this model, see Sotheby's London, April 21, 2004, Lot 114.
