PROVENANCE:
Richard Almack (according to a label on the reverse)

Said to have been a 'servant' of Sir Anthony van Dyck, Bower is recorded to have had a studio at Temple Bar in London by 1637. He is perhaps best known for the three variant portraits that he made of Charles I at his trial in January 1648/49. He then appears to have maintained his business in London during the Commonwealth.
