Alcock/1769' (lower right) oil on canvas 44 x 30 cm. (17 3/8 x 11 3/4 in.) PROVENANCE: With Frost and Reed, Ltd, 1954 Edward Alcock was a portrait painter and miniaturist who, according to the poet, William Shenstone (whose portrait by Alcock hangs in the National Portrait Gallery), was never long in one place. He is recorded to have worked in Bath, Birmingham, Bristol and London. The present small full length portraits in the style of Devis are typical of his oeuvre.
