In Darkest Africa: The fight with the Avisibba Cannibals; The Relief of Nelson and Survivors Camp; Gymnastics in a forest clearing; Our first experiences with Mazanbori's people; View from Nzera Kum Hill; a Phalanx Dance by Mazamboni warriors; Entering Andikumu; The Scouts discover the Pigmies carrying away the case of Ammunition; Starvation camp: serving out milk and butter for broth; Baby rhinoceros showing fight in camp; and Our experiences in Usukuma all signed 'Riou' pencil, pen and ink and grey wash on tinted paper each 4 1/8 x 6 3/8in. (105 x 162mm.) in two common mounts A fine group of 12 original wash drawings by Riou, used for plates 5, 7, 8, 11 and 14 in volume 1 and plates 17-19, 31 and 33 in volume 2, in Stanley's account of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, In Darkest Africa published in 1890. They seem to capture some of the spirit of this unusual expedition.
