Description

Edith Louisa Cavell (1865-1915) IRISES A pair, one signed and dated 8/12/82, pencil and watercolour 28 x 24 cm (2) Provenance: A gift from the artist to the vendor's father. Edith Cavell was born in Norfolk in 1865. She trained as a nurse in London before moving to Belgium, where she was instrumental in developing modern nursing. When the Germans occupied Belgium in 1914, Edith Cavell remained and became involved in the underground movement. She helped allied soldiers to escape across the border to the neutral Netherlands and ultimately to reach England. In August 1915 she was arrested on suspicion of harbouring allied soldiers. She was court-martialled and, despite many international protests, she was sentenced to death in October 1915.
