EDGAR ALEXANDER MCKILLOP (1879-1950) GEORGE WASHINGTON signed on the base; made by E.A. McKillop, Balfour, NC, Hand Carved. carved black walnut, with glass eyes height 28 in. by width 10 1/4 in. by depth 9 1/2 in.

Notes

The well known folk art carver, Edgar McKillop 1879-1950, is best known for his works which cover a wide range of subject matter including clocks, human figures, musical instruments and animals. Originally from North Carolina, McKillop was self taught. His career flourished from 1926 until the death of his wife in 1938.

Other examples of McKillop's work can be seen in the Abby Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, in Williamsburg, Virginia. The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan; and the Philadelphia Museum of Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
