Ed Bearden was a protégé of Jerry Bywaters and assisted him in the design and execution of the WPA mural for the Trinity, Texas, Post Office. Both he and Bywaters visited the Longleaf Pine Company in East Texas. They observed the lumber manufacturing process and made numerous sketches and studies of the most interesting parts.

In the finished mural, the mill pond depicted in this watercolor can be seen on the left side of the composition.
