This pastel by Ed Bearden employs the Frank Reaugh method of using a grit sandpaper to increase the "bite" of the pastel to the paper, thereby improving color saturation. While Bearden was never a student of Reaugh, the technique was taught to him by his mentor and friend Jerry Bywaters. A close comparison of this pastel to pastels done by Bywaters shows the influence Bywaters had on Bearden's work.
