Notes

Earl Alexander of Tunis was a great friend of Edward Seago and it is possible that the present work was painted while staying with Seago in Cascais. The two artists often painted side by side and Seago describes how 'there was never any question of master and pupil between Alex and myself. He was an enchanting painting companion and we both enormously enjoyed the post mortems on our work at the end of the day.' (see E.Seago, The Paintings of Field Marshal Earl Alexander of Tunis, London, 1973, p. 18.
