A heavily worked manuscript, in blue/black ink, the text originally written in pencil, extensively revised, with corrections, alterations, deletions and rewritings, some laid down on additional sheets over the original, later additions in pencil and blue crayon, the Stichvorlage, marked by and for the printer, with proof corrections and casting-off marks and a replacement bar in pencil, marked in one place "orch?", with dedication to Mademoiselle Eugénie Vergin

7 pages, large folio, 36x27cms, no place or date, staining consistent with use by the printer, some creasing

NOTE

This is a fine setting of the poem by Théophile Gautier. It was composed as early as 1869 -1870 and published in 1877. An orchestral version was made in 1876. Duparc intended it for his unfinished (and destroyed) opera Roussalka.
